Funkadelic

Standin' on the Verge of Gettin' It On

On Funkadelic's 6th album, the band, augmented still by the original Parliaments vocal group begun by leader George Clinton, gets wound up for an invigorating display of hard rock/funk & soul, culminating in one of the group's finest records ever. Led by the songwriting team of lead guitarist Eddie Hazel and Head Funkster, George Clinton, "Standing on the Verge of Gettin' It On" exemplifies some of this era's most explosive and propulsive moments, particularly on the record's opener "Red Hot Momma" which features the forceful and distinctive playing and piercing tone of Hazel's virtuosity on the fretboard as well as the delectable keyboard playing and flavorings of Bernie Worrell. "Alice in My Fantasies" is a raging 2 and a half minutes of bass thumping, heavy hitting drumbeats and relentless riffing courtesy of C "Boogie" Mosson, Ron "Tiki" Fulwood and the triad guitar army of Hazel, Gary Shider and Ron Bykowski, respectively. "I'll Stay" is in a laid back groove of funk and soul and remains one of my favorite Funkadelic tracks that uses the best elements of the plethora of talent involved. The vocals of the Parliaments adorn this number adding much substance of style and Hazel and Worrell's guitar and keyboard arrangements further add continuity and depth in crowning this number as one of the very best moments on the record.

"Sexy Ways" is a funky romp with elements of pop in its composition, featuring a dance-beat drum rhythm and some more pyrotechnics courtesy of Eddie Hazel's insatiable guitar style matched with some soulful vocal arrangements. The title cut sends a funky groove up the spine and the vocal track is followed melodically in unison with Hazel's guitar culminating in another pivotal and significant track within this album collective. "Jimmy's Got a Little Bit of Bitch in Him" is an oddly abstract number, rhythmically intricate, accompanied by melodically played guitar and the by now, typical Parliament vocal harmonies. Closing out the set is the tour-de-force, "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" which seems as a relative sequel in the vein of the classic "Maggot Brain" cut from a few years prior; although it doesn't quite match that tracks' intensity or legendary, timeless status. All the same and all the more, it is a very good but, odd number, once the slowed down vocal mix of Clinton's voice enters halfway through its airy and heightened musical landscape. "Standing on the Verge..." is one of four of my favorite Funkadelic releases and sets along nicely with the relatively high points of the proceeding "Let's Take it to the Stage" and "Hardcore Jollies" releases.
